British ERP software is best
According to Naim and Bankside Patterson
From food to cars to clothes, in peace time and in war, the call to Buy British has regularly been sounded out to varying degrees. A quick visit to www.buybritish.com will provide the patriotic consumer with a comprehensive directory of British products, manufacturers, suppliers and services updated on a daily basis.
UK manufacturers are themselves increasingly deciding to buy British when it comes to investing in Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems that are best able to help them remain competitive. And while these companies may or may not be patriotic, their reasons for doing so are based on cold, hard business sense.
Perhaps the most obvious reasons are the desire by manufacturers to invest in that which can be thoroughly evaluated, that which offers the greatest levels of comparable industry experience and technological expertise, as well as ease of access to this before, during and after implementation. Clearly, an ERP solution created and developed in the UK, by a British company, and then implemented and supported by that same company offers a sense of familiarity, insight and expertise not possible with a comparable system authored elsewhere and supported via a network of resellers.
That was the view of Naim Audio, a leading manufacturer of high end audio equipment. When Naim needed to replace its aging in-house expert system, it not only wanted a solution with a particular technological and functional specification, it recognised the value in buying British. IT Manager Jain Giles explains why, "We wanted to build a long term and secure working partnership with a system supplier, and not just a product. Consequently, the people we were dealing with were important, in addition to the company's deep knowledge of the industry as well as its overall attitude. With Exel being the author of EFACS, an established product, we knew that we would have access to the most knowledgeable people about the system, if or when we might ever need it."
Long terms considerations were also important reasons for buying British for Bankside Patterson, the market leading manufacturer and supplier of chassis and modular steel frames. Nick Hardisty, Information Systems Manager explains why. "In addition to a detailed specification list for a system, we knew that we were looking for more than just a system - we were looking to build a long term relationship with a company that would provide the best levels of support, industry insight and compatibility." And what better way of establishing this than seeing for yourself how that potential partner treats its existing customers. Hardisty continues, "We also visited the vendor's Head Office because we wanted to review key members of personnel and company structure from the senior management to the support staff. We analysed the amount and turnaround time as well as the nature of support calls each vendor took and talked to development teams about the future direction of the product."
Like Naim, and many other manufacturers, this helped Bankside Patterson identify that UK base Exel Computer Systems was best able meet their needs. Why buy British? According to Naim and Bankside Patterson, it's because when it comes to ERP, British is best!
