Live tracking for delivery fleet increases efficiency
Britain's largest bed manufacturer Silentnight has gained round the clock visibility of its delivery operations following the introduction of a system linking its digital tachographs with live vehicle tracking via the web. The innovation from Masternaut Three X provides an instant picture of the movements of its vehicles and drivers giving Silentnight's transport management team a 360 degree view of the fleet as it makes deliveries all over the UK.
Combining the digital tachograph information with highly accurate live tracking is enhancing Silentnight's fleet flexibility, enabling it to react quickly to meet customer requirements. Nick Dacey, Silentnight's Distribution Director, says that the integration is also improving running costs.
"The Masternaut integration with the digital tachographs helps us with gathering critical real-time information. We can instantly see who is in transit, idling, taking a break, or making a delivery. It gives us a full and complete view of the fleet, with precise location and movement details. It also extremely convenient as the system is activated as soon as the driver inserts the tacho card into the tachograph, which means there is no need for a driver ID key," he says.
Having gained benefits in transport management, Silentnight plans to extend the live tracking system into other areas of its business.
"Our next project is to link the live tracking with our customer services system. This will allow our customer service people to provide real time delivery information directly to any customer who calls to enquire about their delivery," adds Dacey.
Silentnight is located in Barnoldswick in Lancashire and in over 60 years of business has manufactured over 40 million beds for the UK market. The company manufactures approximately 1800 beds a day with 700 delivered direct to customers and a further 1300 being delivered to retail outlets - all tracked by the Masternaut satellite vehicle tracking system.
