Local authority street works system fights congestion

Wednesday, 25 February 2009

Following the introduction of new government regulations, Highways Authorities across England and Wales are implementing advanced Street Works management software from Mayrise Systems. The system, originally developed for local authorities to control and monitor utility street works, is now being used by authorities to better co-ordinate all works on the highway, not just third party works, reducing disruption and inconvenience to road users.

Wokingham Borough Council is one of the first to use the system. "Following the introduction of the Traffic Management Act we needed parity between the way we manage third party works and the way we manage our own," commented Graham Barnwell, Street Works Manager. "We are a long term user of MAYRISE Street Works for managing notices from utility companies and other highway contractors so it seemed a logical progression for us to use it for the management of our own network improvement and maintenance works."

MAYRISE Street Works is computerised monitoring software that assists the management of street works.  Designed to improve the coordination of street works under the Government's Traffic Management Act (TMA) the latest version is compliant with a new specification called the Electronic Transfer on Notices (EToN 5).  The software helps to monitor works ensuring any conditions are met, tracking unauthorised activities and allowing councils to raise fixed penalty notices and charges for over-runs or failures to reinstate correctly.

"We handle in excess of 13,000 Street Work notices each year, split 50:50 between utility, third party requests and our own works," continued Barnwell. "It is therefore vital that our chosen management system is robust, easy to use and up to the job in hand. MAYRISE for Street Works gives us more control over works on the highway enabling better co-ordination and therefore reducing unnecessary disruption to road users. In addition the customer service and support we receive from the Mayrise team is first class."

Mayrise Systems are one of the UK's leading developers of advanced information management software for UK Local Authorities and partner organisations.
