ICON system proves itself for architects
An online construction information management system used by many of the country’s biggest retail chains is also helping a Leicester-based architects’ practice manage its project information processes.
The system now in use at JS+P Architecture has been developed in conjunction with ICON, the Market Harborough-based provider of a software system available online, which ensures that construction management information is accurately recorded, including surveys, health and safety, and CAD libraries.
Used by John Lewis, Boots, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and ASDA, the ICON system has a range of utilities to help with the management and collation of data for large building projects, ensuring a seamless link throughout a project; from the roll-out phase to ongoing property management.
“We needed to develop a management information system that would create confidence in the accuracy of the information being accessed, amended and transferred by everyone involved in a project,” explains JS+P Architecture Director, Nic Williams.
“The ICON system – upon which our own Information Exchange is based – was an ideal platform upon which to build. We have made amendments, such as directory structures, but it’s incredibly versatile and we can use the system as we would like it.
“The danger for us would have been in buying a system with the intention of adapting it, and still being at the mercy of the supplier as regards how much bespoke work was really possible.
“Our Information Exchange has made it faster and easier to update vital information and keep our customers constantly informed,” adds Nic.
The JS+P Information Exchange enables viewing and transfer of detailed material for specific projects. The system helps the design team collaborate more easily, share information, and keep administration to a minimum, while there are significant benefits around cost control.
“Key benefits include improved communication, updated information, round-the-clock accessibility for everyone concerned, reduced risk, audit trails and improved delivery timescales,” he continues.
“Anyone with internet access and an approved ‘log on’ code can use our exchange and we provide it as a complimentary service to our clients on appropriate projects.
ICON managing director Chris Lovelock says that the company not only strives to provide a standard system that’s flexible and reliable, it works with clients to resolve unique issues.
“We listen closely and create a system that overcomes concerns and provides real benefits. Each one is configurable to the client’s needs – that’s what sets the ICON system apart.”
