Contactless card payments to launch at McDonald's

Tuesday, 1 February 2011

McDonald's customers will soon be able to benefit from lightning-fast contactless card payments as the restaurant chain rolls out contactless card payment in all of its 1,200 UK restaurants by this summer.

The system is being launched jointly with Visa Europe and is the UK's largest rollout of contactless technology.

By using a contactless enabled card, customers will be able to pay in half a second by touching their card against a wireless reader, speeding up service and providing a convenient new payment option.

Contactless payment saves time and effort, allowing customers to quickly pay for items which cost £15 or under without having to search around for cash.  As well as being quick and easy, it's secure, so customers can shop with confidence.

Jill McDonald, President and CEO of McDonald's UK, said: "We were the first major quick-service restaurant to launch payment by cards and we're delighted to be leading the way again with the rollout of contactless payment technology.  Convenient and quick, the technology is the perfect match for McDonald's and we look forward to offering it in all of our restaurants by this summer."

Marc O'Brien, Managing Director of Visa in the UK, "We are delighted McDonalds is accepting Visa contactless payments. This innovative way of paying is ideal for high volume retail environments where speed of service is essential. It offers a secure, convenient and quick alternative to cash while reducing queuing times."
