Tekla announces winners of BIM Awards 2011
Winners for the three categories in the Tekla BIM Award competition were chosen by a jury of BIM experts. The winner of the BIM Project category of the Tekla Global BIM Awards Competition 2011 was Skanska’s Finland head office project, Manskun Rasti in Helsinki, Finland. The Steel award went to the Peace Bridge project in Derry, Northern Ireland, and the Concrete award to the Urban Superway in Adelaide, Australia. Special recognition was given to the Holmenkollen Ski Jump in Oslo, Norway.
Manskun Rasti was acknowledged for the most complete use of BIM from the beginning to the end of the project. Among other things, the extensive use of the BIM and collaboration aspects were praised, as well as the use of IFC for project collaboration and communication for combining the models from different project parties.
The winner of the steel category, the Peace Bridge located in Derry, Northern Ireland, was modeled by Rowecord Engineering. The Peace Bridge stands out for its shape and complex geometry. The model is impressive not for its size, but in the way it has been used in the project.
The Urban Superway, in Southern Australia by Bianco Precast, was selected as the winner in the Concrete category. The project is the biggest single investment ever in a South Australian road project and the state’s most complex engineering road construction project to date.
The Holmenkollen Ski Jump project by Cowi and Lecor Stålteknikreceived a special recognition from the jury for being an extremely impressive project with a unique and complex structure. The winner of the public voting was the Jaypee Nigrie Super Thermal Power project by L&T MHI Boilers in India.
The winners of the competition were chosen by a jury of the world’s leading BIM experts: Professor Charles Eastman from the Georgia Institute of Technology; Björn K. Stangeland, CEO of DDS and product manager for buildingSMART International; Viktor Várkonyi, CEO of Graphisoft; and Wayne Morrison, Pre-Construction Manager from the Herrick Corporation. Tekla was represented byExecutive Vice President Risto Räty.
“Skanska has done pioneering work by utilizing a highly detailed building information model at every step of the building and construction process with outstanding results,” said the jury. “Building information modeling was used in an exemplary way for maximized collaboration. The project was managed based on the model, with all disciplines utilizing the modeled building information.
The entries to the Global BIM Awards competition were the winners of regional Tekla model competitions held by Tekla area offices and resellers during 2011. The competition was divided into three categories: BIM, Steel, and Concrete. Tekla Global BIM Awards 2011 gathered 46 exemplary construction projects around the world and over 2,000 votes were cast for the different Tekla models presented on the competition website.
