The Construction Industry Council appointed Tony Burton as its new Chairman at a meeting of its Council Members. Tony succeeds Jack Pringle, Managing Director of Pringle Brandon Perkins+Will, in this role for a two year term of office, starting with immediate effect. Jack Pringle now becomes Deputy Chairman for a year, in accordance with CIC’s rules and byelaws.
Tony Burton is the second QS and Fellow of the RICS to become Chairman of CIC. Chris Vickers CBE was the first (1996-98). Tony has been CIC Deputy Chairman over the past year.
Tony Burton studied at the University of Reading, graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Quantity Surveying. He joined Gardiner & Theobald in 1979 and qualified as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor in 1983. He became a Partner of the firm in 1989 and a Senior Partner in 2006. Tony’s major clients have included Land Securities, British Land, Allied London, Prudential, EBRD, Linklaters, Lovells, Norton Rose, Unilever, British Airways as well as Local and Central Government. Some of his notable projects are Plantation Place, Cardinal Place, EBRD, The Royal Academy of Music and the London Eye. Internationally he has advised on projects in Europe including France, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria, Italy and the Channel Islands.
Taking up his new role, Tony said: “I am delighted to be appointed as the new Chairman of CIC. I believe CIC has an increasingly important role to play within the construction industry in the wake of the Government’s Industrial Strategy and I am delighted to be part of the team. I look forward to both the challenges and opportunities that the role presents, and to addressing some of the key issues that we face as an industry; in particular, achieving low carbon buildings, defining standards for design quality and continually striving to improve safety in construction. I am personally interested in tackling key issues of concern to many in the industry such as creating a more positive image for construction, addressing the skills shortage and the need for greater diversity of gender and ethnicity.”
CIC Chief Executive, Graham Watts, welcomed the new appointment by saying: “Tony’s considerable experience will be of great importance to maintaining and strengthening our strategic position between industry and government, not least as the professions’ main representative on the Construction Leadership Council. Our past two chairmen have been an engineer (Gordon Masterton) and an architect (Jack Pringle) and the appointment of a leading QS as our new chairman alongside other new appointments to our board of a Town Planner (Graham Stallwood), Highways Engineer (Sheila Holden) a Structural Engineer (John Nolan) and the CEO of the ICE (Nick Baveystock) demonstrates the breadth of CIC’s representation.”

Graham Stallwood, a Trustee of the RTPI and member of the CIC Finance Committee as Honorary Treasurer for a five year term (2014-2019)
John Nolan, Past President of the Institution of Structural Engineers as Vice Chairman for 2014-2016.
Sheila Holden, Immediate Past President of the Chartered Institute of Highways & Transportation as Vice Chairman for 2015-2017 (commencing June 2015) and co-opted member of the Executive Board for a one year term with immediate effect.
Tim Broyd, Vice President of the Institution of Civil Engineers as Vice Chairman for 2016-2018 (commencing June 2016).
Simon Rawlinson, Partner at EC Harris, as Champion for Research, Innovation & Knowledge for 2014-2017 and to serve as a co-opted member of the Board in this capacity.
Nick Baveystock, CEO of the Institution of Civil Engineers as co-opted member of the Executive Board as the representative of member CEOs for a three year term.
