Estimating software systems

Widely used in construction, building, manufacturing and other project based industries, estimating software is regarded as a fundamental application. Over estimate and you lose business, under estimate and you risk making no profit – even a loss. Estimating systems accelerate the bidding process, allowing estimators to use their skill and experience to fine-tune their bids for optimum precision. Integration with CAD, Parametric Modelling and latterly Building Information Modelling (BIM) software and on screen measurement of drawings have largely replaced traditional measurement from scale drawings.

In construction, estimating software varies in functionality depending on the type and size of projects as well as the stage in the construction or design process. Many sophisticated systems have developed for pricing bills of quantity on larger projects and, at the other end of the scale, there are systems specifically designed for pricing small building works from site measurements and drawings. The wider adoption of BIM systems may well steer the future development of estimating software in this market.
