Risk expert offers free guidance to construction industry to help increase safety

With the construction industry having the highest number of fatal injuries and an estimated £19 million paid out in fines last year alone, leading contractor accreditation scheme, Alcumus SafeContractor is offering UK construction companies expert advice with a free online whitepaper, to help reduce risk within the sector.

Alcumus SafeContractor is dedicated to improving the industry, which saw 58,000 non-fatal injuries and 38 fatal injuries in 2017/18, with its SSIP-approved health and safety assessment scheme. Due to the large number of hazards commonly found within construction including working at height, slips and trips, manual handling and fire, it is vital construction leaders improve the management of risks faced by employees.

Gemma Archibald, Managing Director of SafeContractor, commented: “The construction industry employs 2.2 million people, totaling 7% of the entire GB workforce. With over 300,000 businesses involved its little wonder that supply chain management is often flawed. The responsibility of businesses doesn’t just apply to the safety of employees but also contractors, and even the contractors’ sub-contractors. For that reason, companies need to ensure that their contractors’ procedures are robust, before allowing them on site. Our accreditation mitigates this issue, as it collates and assesses contractor health and safety documentation independently to reduce burden and workload from the organisation.

“Although the construction industry is working hard to reduce the number of injuries taking place, there is still more that needs to be done to ensure every worker returns home safely every night. That’s why we have created a free whitepaper, available to download on our website, to help offer advice and guidance on how to employ contractors safely.”
